Welcome, my little creatures of chaos, to Deadbeat Bestie—the haunted corner of the internet where we dissect horror movies, questionable life choices, and the beautifully disastrous decisions of fictional humans who make us wonder if the real monster was the lack of common sense all along.
Today’s nightmare snack?
Curry Barker’s 2025 horror film Obsession—a twisted little tale that asks the age-old question: “What if you finally got everything you wanted… and immediately realized you fucked up big time!”

Because apparently, humanity’s greatest weakness isn’t hubris, greed, or curiosity.
It’s seeing a suspicious magical object and thinking, “Yeah, I’m sure this won’t ruin my entire life.”
(Narrator voice: It absolutely ruins his entire life.)
Obsession follows Bear, a hopeless romantic who makes a supernatural wish in an attempt to win the heart of his longtime crush, Nikki. But as every horror fan knows, magical shortcuts to happiness usually come with a tiny little catch. And by “tiny little catch,” I mean the kind that makes you jump off your couch screaming, “PUT THAT THING BACK WHERE IT CAME FROM OR SO HELP ME!!!!”
This film explores (in the best, creepiest, horror-filled way) the ways people can become trapped in relationships that slowly change them and that might be one of the scariest monsters of all.
At first glance, Obsession appears to be about desire, longing, and the dangerous consequences of getting exactly what you think you want. But beneath the supernatural elements is a story about control, attachment, and the way unhealthy dynamics can disguise themselves as devotion.
Because that’s the sneaky thing about toxic relationships—they rarely walk through the door wearing a villain costume and carrying a giant warning sign.
Sometimes they arrive dressed as affection.
Sometimes they look like passion.
Sometimes they even feel like being chosen.
Obsession plays with that uncomfortable space between love and possession, exploring how easy it can be for someone to mistake intensity for intimacy. The film doesn’t need to stand on a soapbox and announce its themes; instead, it lets the audience sit with the unease as small cracks begin to appear.
The horror comes from watching boundaries blur.
From watching someone’s world become smaller.
From watching something that once seemed exciting slowly reveal itself as something much darker.
And isn’t that one of the most effective forms of horror? Not the monster hiding under the bed—but the realization that the thing you trusted might be the very thing causing the fear.
Sure, there are some terrifying visuals and gross-you-out moments... not to mention some absolutely unexpected violence. In my opinion that's the fancy frame to this mirror on relationships.
This film also taps into a difficult truth about abusive relationships: leaving is rarely as simple as outsiders imagine. Fear, hope, attachment, guilt, and the belief that things might return to the way they were can create complicated emotional traps. Obsession explores these ideas through the lens of horror, where the supernatural becomes a metaphor for the invisible forces that can keep people stuck.
The scariest part isn’t always the threat chasing someone.
Sometimes it’s the voice convincing them to stay.
Deadbeat Bestie’s Horror Report:
🖤 Rating: 6/10
🖤 Creep Factor: More psychological than jump-scare driven—the kind of horror that follows you after the credits.
🖤 Would I Survive?: I’d like to say yes, but horror movies have taught me that recognizing red flags in fiction is much easier than spotting them when you’re emotionally invested.
Obsession works because it understands that horror isn’t just about what happens to people.
It’s a reminder that obsession is not the same as devotion. Control is not the same as protection. And someone wanting you desperately does not always mean they value you.
So light your candles, grab your snacks, and settle in for a horror story that isn’t just about the supernatural.
Because sometimes the most frightening thing isn’t a monster waiting in the dark.
Sometimes it’s realizing the monster has been inside all along.
Stay spooky, stay curious, and as always…
Trust your instincts. They’re usually screaming for a reason.
